WHAT: HBCF, an award-winning charitable construction program that builds for the homeless and others in need, is hosting its 5th annual fundraising and networking event – the Community Builders Bull & Oyster Roast. The event will take place on the grounds of the Ruppert Companies‘ beautiful LEED-certified corporate headquarter campus in Laytonsville, Maryland. Over 250 people are expected to attend.
At the roast, HBCF will present the Robert L. Mitchell Founders Award for community service to Mr. and Mrs. Pleasants. Mr. Mitchell himself, who established HBCF in the early 80s as Operation Tom Sawyer Foundation, will present the award.
William D. “Don” Pleasants, Jr. and Claudia Forman Pleasants are both affiliated with the Pleasants family of related companies involved in commercial and residential development and construction in the Washington metropolitan area and have been dedicated supporters of the Home Builders Care Foundation since its inception.
Don Pleasants joined his father in Pleasant Excavating in the 1960’s and took the helm as president in 1983, expanding the enterprise to include several related businesses. Over the year, Don has supported numerous charitable organizations and community groups through donations and participation on boards, and he has helped fund military and veterans assistance programs, youth sports, efforts to fight disease, food banks, religious organizations, Special Olympics, housing for the homeless and many other causes through the Pleasants Family Foundation.
Claudia Pleasants serves as principal broker and president for Suburban Properties, Inc., a real estate brokerage subsidiary of the Pleasants companies. Claudia has served as a trustee of the Real Estate Advisory Board of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School; a trustee of the George Mason University Foundation; president of the Suburban Maryland Chapter of Commercial Real Estate Women; a board member of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Metropolitan Washington; and a trustee of Hospice Caring.
The fundraising event will also feature a Clothing Drive, hosted by the Professional Women in Building Council. Clothing will be donated to low-income clients of the Interfaith Works Clothing Center in Rockville.
HBCF is the 501 (c) (3) charitable foundation of MBIA and serves 85% of the state of Maryland and Washington DC.
