In partnership with HomeAid America, our HomeAid Washington DC will host its first ever “Care Day” with Bank of America on December 19th!
The service project for Bank of America employee volunteers involves preparing 24 Welcome Baskets for formerly homeless families moving into apartments. Just in time for the holidays!
The Welcome Baskets will be donated to the Partnership for Permanent Housing (PPH) Program of the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless.
This Welcome Basket Project follows MCCH’s recent efforts as part of the national 100,000 HOMES Campaign, a movement of over 200 communities working to find permanent homes for 100,000 chronic and medically vulnerable homeless Americans.
The 2013 Point-in-Time Count of Homeless Persons in the Metropolitan Washington Region, known as the PIT report, found on one given day that 1,004 individuals experienced homelessness in Montgomery County, and that 222 of these individuals were chronically homeless.
Each Welcome Basket will be filled with housekeeping essentials for formerly homeless and now new housed tenants and includes:
- Kitchen Items – dishes, pots and pans, utensils, flatware, mixing bowls and a can opener.
- Linens and other items – sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, lightbulbs, an alarm clock and laundry baskets.
- Cleaning Supplies – dish soap, laundry detergent, sponges, all-purpose cleaner, paper towels, a broom and dustpan, wastebaskets and trashbags.
- Personal Items – shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrush, razors, shaving cream and lotion.
Once completed, the baskets will be stored temporarily at the 135-bed Home Builders Care Assessment Center (HBCAC) for homeless men. Then one-by-one as formerly homeless individuals and families are housed, they will be donated to new tenants in the PPH program!
